Mirrored Neurons

The following is the communion message I delivered at Academia Church this past Sunday.

Luke 14:16-24

16But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. 17And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant[a] to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20And another said, ’I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24For I tell you,[b] none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

Communion, what is it? To be honest I never really knew what it meant up until this past August. I grew up in church where we hardly participated in the “Lord’s supper,” the “Lord’s table,” the “Eucharist.” We have now been functioning as a new church for six months and we have not done the “official” deed in our small congregation. Probably because we are riddled with the guilt of all of our “sinning” or maybe because we are full of excuses. Or maybe we just don’t want to do what it actually means.

In August of this year I witnessed something that has changed my life completely. I read somewhere that “Humans have what are called mirror neurons. When a human witnesses another human overcome with a certain emotion- be it love, sadness, anger, or what have you- the same neuron which causes that emotion triggers in the witness. This is no more obvious than in watching movies. Why do I, who did not necessarily grow up with a loving father that was willing to give his all for my well-being, cry every time I watch John Q? How come when one baby starts crying in a room, the other babies in the room begin crying as well? Because of mirror neurons. In an effort to move people beyond just sacrificing money for a “cause,” to participating in a sacrificial community, we invite all people to the park to see what we are doing with their own eyes, hoping that mirror neurons will be triggered and people with the means to assist will be moved to compassion by the plight of their neighbor.”

In case you cannot tell by now I am referring to you, the community of Academia church. Part of the Lord’s precious body.

The announcement that “God is in charge and this is what it looks like.” To go out into the lanes and streets of the city and bring in the poor, the maimed, the blind and the lame, outcasts and the unworthy. To sit together and share a meal as equals in God’s kingdom. Four months ago those mirror neurons kicked in and my wife and kids and one other friend started “Help A Human.” where we made sandwiches from our kids weekly lunch for school and went looking for the marginalized in our community. We landed at one of the worst parks in the San Fernando Valley-Hansen Damn park. Where a recent Daily News headline reads “Hansen Dam Park rape triggers $400,000 upgrade to deter crime”

In particular our spot is “by the library” where the article states: “Near the library, small knots of drug dealers trade crack cocaine and marijuana. Drunken brawls occasionally break out near the soccer field. And men are frequently cited for lewd behavior in the bushes near Osborne Street.” Sack lunches quickly became hot homemade meals and one friend coming out turned into fifteen where we sit and enjoy a meal together, as equals in the Kingdom with our friends in the park. Where we now know many by first name basis, where I get my weekly kiss from Tuna, an old woman who sleeps in the bathroom stall at night when the sting of the cold Santa Ana winds is just to much to bear.

Healing, reconciliation, resurrection, new creation is happening right before our very eyes. Not exactly in our friends in the park (although that is indeed happening) but in us! All those who participate week in and week out. Every week I get at least one phone call from someone moved to tears after having a meal in the park with the “least of these.” We have been participating in the “Lord’s table” the “Lord’s supper” the “Eucharist” without even knowing it, without ever setting foot in a church building. (We discovered our mission)

Kenneth Bailey states:”The Eucharist can be understood as a foreshadowing of the great banquet. At communion, believers are invited, in the present, to participate in the messianic banquet of the end time. We remember the past, celebrate in the present and look forward to the marriage supper of the Lamb. The parable assures the faithful that they already have a place at that banquet.”

Thank God that we are still invited to the great banquet, those of us “religious” people who don’t even know what we are doing, “not discerning the body.”

Lawrence Garcia states: “we should cast-off the chains of guilt, unworthiness, and despair which so often cloud the joyous feast we call the Eucharist and begin dinning with the Lord who delights to sit next to sinners. On the other, as we approach the open Table our concerns should be that our needy, helpless, and marginalized brothers and sisters are provided for and honored as the greatest among us. It is when this is accomplished that Jesus will say to us, ‘For I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you gave Me clothing, I was sick and you took care of Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’

As we come to the table today, lets keep this in mind. As we are bearing God’s image in the world, bringing the kingdom on earth, we don’t know who might be watching. Someone’s “mirror neurons will be triggered and people with the means to assist will be moved to compassion by the plight of their neighbor.”

North Koreans: The Most Enslaved People On Earth

This is something the establishment media has completely failed to explain properly. All the video footage of weeping North Koreans stricken with grief over the death of the “dear leader” Kim Jong-Il is by no means spontaneous or natural. It’s all part of the fun of living in a Stalinist dictatorship. If citizens do not show the appropriately sullen facial expressions, if they don’t produce tears, and if they don’t properly grieve for the dead dictator, they face imprisonment and possible execution. Sure, some of the grief is genuine, it’s the result of a lifetime of brainwashing and the enforcement of the cult of personality. But in the most arcane and brutal police state on the planet, not being upset over Kim Jong-Il’s death could mean you’re reported as an enemy of the state by the local spy and sent to a gulag. Your entire family could also be targeted for the same treatment. Identical scenes were witnessed after the death of the previous “dear leader,” Kim Il-sung. Millions of North Koreans have starved to death over the past 20 years as a result of the regime’s disastrous economic policies and their refusal to accept food aid. Food is still scarce, so the fact that citizens are also handed small snacks if they attend these spectacles and put on a fake display of grief is also a massive incentive for a permanently hungry population. North Korea is the perfect illustration of what happens when power is concentrated into the hands of the few – totalitarianism, mass starvation, economic collapse and complete enslavement. It’s a warning the western world would do well to heed, especially in the aftermath of the passage of a law which formally opens up the chance of Americans being sent to gulags in the name of state security.

A Giant Leap of Faith- Levi needs your help!

A very good friend of mine from Wisconsin sent this to me this morning. Lets come to together and try to help this family.

“Hey guys!I have a favor to ask from you all. There is a teacher from the school I went to in MN (North Central University) whose son is very sick. I am not sure of all the details of his sons illness but it has reached the point where the treatment he needs to recover means they have to travel to California for 2 months. They will be leaving mid-December and planning to return to MN in February. He put out a facebook request for people in different ways they can help. Besides the monetary needs he is requesting, he is looking for connections in the Southern California area. Specifically they are looking to get connected with a church and meet good people out there who can help them through this difficult time. They will be staying in Rancho Cucamonga while they are there. The teachers name is Peter Shu and is a phenomenal musician. This guy plays the piano like I have NEVER seen before. He can do any style and can arrange music in such a way that just completely blows your mind. His wife also has such a heart for worship. She used to teach the worship dance class at NCU. Music is their main source of income as well, so any connections with churches that they could get to open this avenue are very important.
So I bring this to you all because I know your heart to help those in need of help. These are great godly people who have a sick child and are looking for others to come and lift them up during this time. I have attached a link to his letter that he sent out on facebook so you can see his needs. If you or your church is able to fill the need great, OR if you can connect with them with a church than can help that is great too! I don’t believe that we are connected so far away not to have divine moments happen where we know someone, who knows someone we can help. So please read this and let me know if there is anyway you guys can help. I love you all and so blessed to call you my friends!”

Happy Anniversary

Nine years ago I married the love of my life, my one true love. And even though it has not been easy the past 9 years, as a matter of fact down right hard, I would not trade  it for anything in the world. The last year and a half were especially trying on our marriage but I finally realized what one of my pastors told me when I first married. “Marriage is not about being happy, it’s about growing”. The last year and a half I think I’ve grown about 10 years! I found Jesus again through my wife when I just about turned my back on him. Love, acceptance, forgiveness and reconciliation. On this anniversary I want to thank my wife for loving me, and helping me become a better husband, father and human being.
I love you Priscilla.
